Total appointment length:

40 minutes.

Common reasons for scanning the upper/lower abdomen?
Right sided/upper abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver function test results, upper abdominal mass, gall bladder polyps/stones/disease, persistent bloating/abdominal distension, recurrent urinary tract infections.

What can be checked?
The following structures can be examined: Liver, abdominal aorta, common bile duct, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, and prostate (volume). Post-micturition bladder volume will also be recorded. Please note, certain factors, such as a person's body shape/BMI or overlying bowel gas, can make some structures difficult to see e.g., the presence of bowel gas may prevent part of the pancreas being seen.

Common reasons for scanning the testes/scrotum?
Lump felt in scrotum, scrotal/testicular pain.

What can be checked?
The following structures can be examined during the scan: Testes, epididymides, veins within scrotum. Common findings on a Testes scan include: cysts, varicoceles, hydroceles.

Preparation for a “Complete Check” scan?
Do not eat anything for 6 hours before the examination. Drinking water is fine, but no coffee/tea, with milk in it.

A full bladder is also needed for the scan. Please finish drinking one pint of water, one hour before your appointment time.

What will happen in the scan room?

The Sonographer will discuss your symptoms/concerns with you and then ask you to part your clothes, to allow access to your upper/lower abdomen. You will then be asked to lie on the examination couch and will have a probe with gel on it moved across your abdomen, so that the Upper/Lower Abdomen scan can be performed.

A Dragon Ultrasound chaperone will be present in the room when the Sonographer performs the scan of the testes. You will be asked to lower your trousers and given a paper towel to help maintain your modesty. A probe with ultrasound gel on it will be moved over the scrotum – only light pressure is used (the scan should not be uncomfortable). After the scan you will be given privacy to dress, and the Sonographer will verbally tell you your results. Once back in the reception area you will be given a printed copy of the report.

Report:
The results from the scan will be verbally explained to you at the end of the examination. An electronic report will be emailed to you within 24 hours of your appointment, and if required, a paper copy of the report can also be posted to you and your healthcare provider/GP, at no extra cost.

Images from the scan:

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
