Upper Abdomen (Liver and Gallbladder)

Common reasons for scan?

  • Right sided/upper abdominal pain.

  • Jaundice.

  • Abnormal liver function test results.

  • Fatty liver disease.

  • Upper abdominal mass.

  • Gall bladder polyps/stones/disease.

  • Persistent bloating/abdominal distension.

What will be checked?

The following structures can be examined:

  • Liver.

  • Abdominal aorta.

  • Common bile duct.

  • Gallbladder.

  • Pancreas.

  • Spleen.

  • Kidneys.


    Please note, certain factors, such as a person's body shape/BMI or overlying bowel gas, can make some structures difficult to see e.g., the presence of bowel gas may prevent part of the pancreas being seen.

    Extra time will be spent scanning the liver and gallbladder ensuring that these organs have been examined as thoroughly as possible.

Preparation?

Do not eat anything for 6 hours before the examination. Drinking water is fine, but no coffee/tea with milk in it.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
