Rotator Cuff Tears

A rotator cuff tear is a common injury that can cause pain and weakness in the shoulder. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that help to stabilize the shoulder joint and allow for movement. A tear can occur after a sudden injury, be caused be repetitive activities, or happen due to ageing, with degeneration of the tissues.

Symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include pain in and around the shoulder joint, painful movement of the shoulder, weakness in the shoulder or arm, and clicking or catching when moving the shoulder.

Ultrasound imaging can be as accurate as MRI for diagnosing full-thickness rotator cuff tears. Dragon Ultrasound welcomes referrals from doctors, chiropractors, sports therapists and physiotherapists, but self-referrals are also accepted.

Treatment for a rotator cuff tear depends on the severity of the injury. Most people with rotator cuff problems can be successfully treated by a combination of exercises (avoiding overhead activities), painkillers, physiotherapy, and occasionally steroid injections. Surgery is sometimes an option. If you experience any of the symptoms associated with rotator cuff tears, it’s important to see a doctor/appropriately trained healthcare professional, for a full assessment.
