Common reasons for scan?

  • Recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infections).

  • Incomplete emptying of bladder after urination.

  • Frequent need to urinate.

  • Haematuria (blood in the urine).

  • Pain in kidney/bladder area.

  • Follow-up of kidney/bladder cysts/lesions/stones.

What can be checked?

  • Size and appearance of kidneys, including assessing for evidence of stones, cysts, lesions, scarring, and hydronephrosis (fluid in the kidney).

  • Appearance of urinary bladder, including assessing for lesions, stones and bladder wall thickening.

  • Volume of bladder, before and after urination.

Preparation?

A full bladder is needed for the scan. Please finish drinking one pint of water, one hour before your appointment time.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
