Ultrasound scanning of the ankle/foot is usually focussed to a single area/pathology. Extra areas may also be examined if symptomatic and appropriate.
Common reasons for scan?
Pain around the ankle - looking for tendon tears/pathology that may be affecting movement.
Tenosynovitis.
Ligament injuries.
Swelling/Effusion.
Achilles tendon injuries.
Morton's neuroma.
Plantar fasciitis.
Ganglion cysts.
Soft tissue lumps.
Tendon injuries and disorders.
Bursitis.
Inflammation of joint.
What can be checked?
Anterior ankle joint.
Medial ankle tendons.
Lateral ankle tendons.
Anterior ankle tendons.
Achilles tendon.
Bursae.
Plantar fascia.
Tarsometatarsal joints.
Metatarsophalangeal joints.
Interphalangeal joints.
Interdigital spaces.
Some ligaments (e.g. anterior tibiofibular, calcaneofibular, deltoid).
Preparation?
Shoes and socks will need to be removed from both feet, and trousers rolled up to knees.
Report:
You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
