Total appointment length:

40 minutes.

Ultrasound scanning of the ankle/foot is usually focussed to a single area/pathology. Extra areas may also be examined if symptomatic and appropriate.

Common reasons for scan?

  • Pain around the ankle - looking for tendon tears/pathology that may be affecting movement.

  • Tenosynovitis.

  • Ligament injuries.

  • Swelling/Effusion.

  • Achilles tendon injuries.

  • Morton's neuroma.

  • Plantar fasciitis.

  • Ganglion cysts.

  • Soft tissue lumps.

  • Tendon injuries and disorders.

  • Bursitis.

  • Inflammation of joint.

What can be checked?

  • Anterior ankle joint.

  • Medial ankle tendons.

  • Lateral ankle tendons.

  • Anterior ankle tendons.

  • Achilles tendon.

  • Bursae.

  • Plantar fascia.

  • Tarsometatarsal joints.

  • Metatarsophalangeal joints.

  • Interphalangeal joints.

  • Interdigital spaces.

  • Some ligaments (e.g. anterior tibiofibular, calcaneofibular, deltoid).

Preparation?

Shoes and socks will need to be removed from both feet, and trousers rolled up to knees.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
