Common reasons for scan?

  • People with a history of AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm).

  • Men over the age of 66 and women over the age of 70 are at a higher risk of AAA.

  • Pulsing sensation in central abdomen.

  • Central abdomen pain that does not go away.

  • Ultrasound is useful for the early diagnosis of aneurysms, and for monitoring their size.

What can be checked?

The diameter of the abdominal aorta, and the appearance of its walls, from the upper abdomen, to where it bifurcates.

Preparation?

Do not eat anything for 6 hours before the examination. Drinking water is fine, but no coffee/tea, with milk in it.

Report:

You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
