Heel pain.
Pain in central calf muscle.
Tendon injury/tears.
Tendinosis.
Achilles tendinitis.
Insertional calcific calcaneal spurs.
Heel bursitis.
What can be checked?.
Achilles tendon insertion, appearance, and thickness.
Evidence of increased vascularity/blood flow of the Achilles tendon using power Doppler.
Cortex of calcaneum at Achilles tendon insertion.
Appearance of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.
Bursae.
Scan to include:
This scan focuses on the Achilles tendon (assessing for tendinopathy, enthesitis, enthesopathy, tears, calcification), however, other structures in this region may be included if appropriate and/or symptomatic, and within the clinical experience of the ultrasound practitioner.
Preparation?
- Shoes and socks will need to be removed from both feet and trousers rolled up to knees.
Report:
You will be given a printed copy and/or emailed an electronic copy of the ultrasound scan report.

Images from the scan can be purchased at the reception desk. Please note: Due to various guidelines stated by the Society of Radiographers (Recording of Images and Clinical Discussions, SOR, 2019), photographs cannot be taken during the examination room at Dragon Ultrasound.
